Functional Fitness

Garett

First, I want to say that I am proud that I take pride in my body and I am always amazed at how poorly people treat their bodies. Your body is your only true “vehicle” for this world and should be treated with the upmost respect and care. Our quality of life is most directly related to how well our body looks and functions.

Now let me tell you a little about myself. I am a triathlete, soccer player, snowboarder, and all around active person. For the better part of my life I have always been involved in some sort of physical activity/training, but believe it or not, I also have a lazy tendency when it comes to working out. What does that mean? That means I would much rather spend my time playing sports, participating in fun/new hobbies, drinking wine with good people, traveling or taking on new challenges, instead of spending hours on end in the gym. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy working out but, I workout so that I can enjoy/participate in life, not sit on the sidelines.

My lifetime fitness journey has led me to try just about every fad-fitness program and /or workout. I have learned a lot about what works, but most importantly I have learn about what does not work. The three most important findings to date are:

  1. Building a pure strength foundation will significantly improve both the quality of life and sports performance more than another type of training
  2. What you eat affects your body composition, general health, energy level, and mental status more than any training program.
  3. Without proper rest and recovery your progress will quickly plateau.

Most recently I have been fascinated with achieving the greatest results in the least amount of time–remember my lazy tenancies. I believe in following the 80/20 rule when working out. This means achieving 80% of your results in 20% of your time and effort. This is done by removing the time wasting, very inefficient muscle isolation exercises. Instead using heavy compound “free weight” exercises. Remember, our body is a complete system not a system of individual parts. So when you train your body as a complete system you build the most strength, significantly reduce the likelihood of injuries, and build an extremely sexy body–you definitely get the most “bang for your buck”!

I do not proclaim that I am “Master of the Fitness Universe” or that I even  “know it all.” I am always experimenting and learning, even though it is possible that my views on health and fitness may change in the future when I publish something I fully believe in that idea or approach at the time. While I am not the “Master”, my friends, colleagues and random people constantly ask me how I got to look the way I do. I don’t keep secretes and I am still striving to look better and get stronger. I want to share my fitness and health journey with you and hope that would will do the same with me.

Remember it is never too late to start training, but THE SOONER THE BETTER! Don’t hesitate to contact me for more information.
